Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Cora Wilson Stewart was an educator and author, born 17 January 1875 at her parents' farm in Powell County. She was the daughter of Dr. Jeremiah and Annie Eliza (Hally) Wilson and was educated at Morehead Normal school, National Normal University in Lebanon, Ohio, and the University of Kentucky. She began her teaching career in Rowan County in 1895, becoming so highly regarded that she was elected to the post of school superintendent for the county in 1901. In 1904 she married Rowan County school teacher Alexander T. Stewart, and five years later she became the first woman president of the Kentucky Educational Association. In that same year she began her groundbreaking work in adult education, establishing the first "moonlight schools" in order to remedy adult illiteracy in Rowan County. The program made use of county school buildings after hours and employed as a text the Rowan County Messenger, an educational newspaper Stewart founded expressly for the purpose of developing an adult literacy training program which could avoid the stigma associated with primers. By 1913 moonlight schools had spread to seven other counties, and an institute in Morehead a year earlier had examined the problems and techniques of drawing and instructing illiterate adults. During this time, she generally received support from the state, as well as the press in Kentucky, attested to by the expansive correspondence she kept. During the first World War and Russian revolution she capitalized on patriotic sentiment to encourage the education of illiterate soldiers and warn of the susceptibility of unlettered individuals to communism. She worked on the behalf of many educational organizations during the 1920s and 1930s, including the Illiteracy Commission of the National Education Association, the National Illiteracy Crusade, and the World Federation of Educational Association. Stewart sought to establish standards of literacy in the African American and Native American populations as well. By the mid to late 1930s she had become less involved with education, devoting her attention to the Oxford Group, a religious organization, which believed that an individual's life should be guided by Divine Instruction. Cora Wilson Stewart passed away in December 1958 in North Carolina.
- Scope and Content
- The Cora Wilson Stewart Papers (dated 1869-1979, undated; 17.18 cubic feet; 70 document boxes, 4 flat boxes, 6 oversize folders, 3 items) consists of correspondence, speeches, subject files, pamphlets, scrapbooks, notebooks, posters, and publications that predominately showcase the efforts of Stewart to combat illiteracy in Kentucky and the greater United States from 1900 to the 1930s. The majority of the collection is comprised of correspondence to and from Cora Wilson Stewart between 1900 until her death in 1958 as well as some from family dating to 1979. This series is organized into three separate sub-series: by major correspondent, by year, and by major subjects. Correspondence includes letters from significant figures such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Calvin Coolidge, Alben Barkley, Ruth Bryan Owen, and William Allen White. The correspondence primarily relates to Wilson's efforts and involvement with the Kentucky Illiteracy Commission, Illiteracy Commission of the National Education Association (NEA), the National Illiteracy Crusade, the World federation of Educational Associations, and other organizations active through the 1920s and early 1930s. The remaining series also document the efforts to combat illiteracy in the United States, organized by subject. These include Native American education, moonlight schools, illiteracy and education conferences, publications by Cora Wilson Stewart and educational organizations, and illiteracy statistics. Most of the series are arranged alphabetically, however, the newspaper clippings series is arranged chronologically. The posters series documents the promotional materials of the Campaign to Combat Illiteracy in Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and South Carolina as well as some achievements and certificates bestowed upon Stewart for her efforts. The artifacts series is comprised of two items: a leather strip with Native American art on it and the "Loving Cup". Two series document Stewart's life outside of her work in education; Biographical Materials documents her family and personal life and Religious Writings showcase her notes and work with the Oxford group in the late-1930s.
