 PREFACE 'z" '

The publication herewith presented, an index to the probate cases
filed in Brazos County, Texas, is No. 21 of the Texas series of counties.
The publication is intended to meet the requirements of daysto—day usage
by the officials of the county, attorneys, businessmen, and other citi-
zens who have occasion to consult probate case records for the proper
conduct of their affairs. The publication may be used by historians and
genealogists to obtain references to unpublished source material.

The names of the deceased persons, minors, and other principals are
arranged alphabetically, with reference to the filing date of the case
and the case number. The following numbers in the series 1—1766 were
not used as case numbers: 212, 217, 244, 276, 289, 375, 394, 414, 451,
500, 609, 610, 626, 628, 661, 683, 688, 707, 725, 737, 739, 7th, 767,
759, 760, 763, 758, 781, 836, 923, 924, 936, 941, 951, 957, 965, 976,
1000, 1182.

In Brazos County, all probate records are in the custody of the
county clerk. Probate case papers are located in the clerk's vault,
in 69 steel file drawers along the north wall. The first five file draw;
ers, marked lA—182A, contain papers filed 1845—1906; the cases are arranged
alphabetically by the first letter of the surname of the estate, and are
numbered by numbers assigned by the clerk for filing purposes only. The
next nine file drawers, marked 15—1AB%, contain papers filed 1860478; the
cases are arranged numerically by numbers assigned by the clerk for fil—
ing purposes. In the remaining 55 file drawers, marked 166-1960, cases
filed 1868 to date are arranged numerically by case number, and chronolog—

' ically by filing date since 1879, when the current system of numbering
cases consecutively was inaugurated.

- Since the transfer of territory from one county to another has af-
fected probate jurisdiction and has determined the county in which the
probate.case should have been filed, a map and table of territorial
changes are included herein. Notations concerning present location and
availability of records pertinent to Brazos County follow: ' "
