T he strenuous vigilance of P resident Taylor had stifled the Cuban P atriots i n New Y o r k ; the men whom they had assembled on Bound Island had been captured by U . S. vessels, and brought back; a large quantity of m unitions h ad been seized; considerable sums of revolutionary money were consequently lost, and "the cause" suffered a serious check. But nothing: c ould, or can, shake the determination and confidence of General Lopez, i n the final accomplishment of the grand a im to which his life has been devoted     the liberation of Cuba from Spanish d omination. H i s friends i n New Y o r k s till continued to give him assurances that the Expedition should be set afloat from that city. The next time t hey would be more prudent than to let such a "Bagwind" as Bennett, of the Herald, i nto the secrets; who, by h is c ontinual allusions to the subject, mysterious hints, and flaming articles i n favor of Cuban Independence,

brought the patriotic operations to p ublic n otice, and challenged the v igi" lance of the Government officers. G eneral L opez waited sometime on the movements of his friends i n the E ast, but finding them so t imid and d ilatory, he at length resolved to rest h is hopes u pon men of the bold West and c hivalric South. Accordingly, e arly i n the Spring he left New York, and t ravelled incog, d own the Ohio and M ississippi rivers to New Orleans     stopping at different places i n K e n tucky, Tennessee and M ississippi, to confer w ith those interested i n the C uban project, and arrange matters for the speedy s ailing of the E x p e d i tion from the "Crescent C i t y . " It needs not be said that he found many gallant and gifted young men, ready, to become soldiers of f ortune   willing to respond to the simultaneous calls of the oppressed for sympathy and assistance; of ambition to "glory or the grave; and the allurements of golden ease i n the "Garden of the W o r l d "     so sure to be the reward of those who v ictoriously s urvived the desperate
