The Landsdowne family was active in Kentucky and West Virginia politics. The family was from Carter County, Ky.
Scope and Content
The Lansdowne family papers consist of materials which document the Lansdowne family of Carter County, Ky. and Charles W. Osenton, a West Virginia politician who was a descendent of the Lansdownes. The collection consists of two distinct groups. One consists of land titles and business receipts which belonged to the Lansdownes, and dates from 1830 to 1880. The other group of papers relates to Charles W. Osenton's political activities and his career as a criminal lawyer and prosecuting attorney. A scrapbook contains letters and clippings about his career. Several of the letters are from Champ Clark, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and runner-up for the 1912 Democratic nomination for President, concerning his unsuccessful bid against Woodrow Wilson at the Baltimore convention. There are also a number of political broadsides from Kentucky and West Virginia in the collection.
