- Biography / History
- Crittenden H. C. Anderson (1878-1970) was born in Carlinville, Illinois, to attorney Walter E. P. Anderson (1850-1929) and Nellie Hamilton Anderson (1854-1944). His elder brother, Walter Anderson (1875-1959) was a captain in the U.S. Navy and commanded the USS Kidd. In June of 1901, Crittenden married Nell Patchin (1876-1966) and together they had two sons: Walter Edwin Patchin Anderson (1904-1979) and C. Henry Crawford Anderson, Jr. (1908-1987). Anderson made his business in the selling of hogs, chickens, and dogs, and moved from Illinois to Texas to start a ranch to build the business. His wife and sons stayed in Illinois until it was complete and he was able to afford to send for them to join him in 1910.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Crittenden H.C. Anderson letters (dated 1883-1983, bulk 1900-1910; 1.35 cubic feet; 3 boxes) comprise letters between Crittenden Anderson and family members and customers that discuss the sale of livestock, business, family life, and military affairs. The majority of the letters are from customers inquiring about prices of hogs and other livestock. Letters from his father, mother, and brother discuss advice on business, local news in Illinois, and life in the Navy and on the USS Kidd. There are also a few letters from Anderson's wife, Nell, that discuss their children and the difficulties of having the head of house away in Texas.
- The Crittenden H.C. Anderson family letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
