their teeth and plowing through
their most grueling challenge of the
semester

If you think it's bad writing one
paper. think about grading 25 or 30
of them under deadline

They all look bad after the first
three or four

When the clock is running dry and
the red marker says 3 a m. those
careless spelling and grammatical
errors come screaming off the page.
and the slightest inconSistency in an
otherwise sound argument becomes
a logical fallacy that could set a
cemetery full of philosophers on
edge

View. academia could be a little less
painful for everybody

So hey, let‘s be careful out there
Do a little extra proofreading this
time Maybe it's too late to cram a
semester's worth of knowledge into
mose papers. but you can at least
make sure what you've written will
be judged for its content rather than
your late-night mechanical mistak
es

All teachers appreciate a cleai:
piece of work. and while that won’t
guarantee you a top grade. it will
put your teachers in a better mood
as they read That never hurts

Sure. most students will forever

. . . If you think it ’5 bad writing one paper.
think about the torment ofgrading 25 or 30 of

them under deadline.

They all look bad after the first three or

four . .

Believe it or not. most teachers
want to give students a fair shake
lt‘s challenging enough to critique a
stack of student work in a balanced
and informed manner. without won»

what they really meant or just
tripped over the mechanics of get-
ting it written

None of which mSight makes those
assignments any less difficult for
students. of course

that if students would at least brief-

advice to the contrary

In fact. teachers who gripe most
about student lazmess may be recai
ling their own shortcomings both
past and present in the vain hope
that someday a student or two will
heed the warnings they shamelessly
ignored

They are teachers. you know. and

‘Butt out’

I an. writing in response to the
letter published in the April 3 issue
of ’he Kentucky Kernel When I
read the article “Sick and Tired.‘ l
became very bitter

I had taken the 105 class and was
content to receive a “B" l conSId-
ered myself a VlCIlm of the system
But when l was referred to as being
“conceited, overconfideni and im-
mature.‘ l was irked to no end

The author of 'Slck and Tired"

had many advantages over the
freshmen w ho had taken the 105
course during Fall 188.3 First of all.
the chemistry department made it
know: that the new tevtbook they
were using was harder than the one
they used before

Second the author of “Sick and
Tired had the priv'ilege to drop one
of his tests And finally, he had
taken his chemistry course when he
was an upperclassman He had col-
lege experience and he knew how to
study

A treshmar. fresh out of high
school is not ready to study with the
intensuy required in order to pass
t'nemistry 105 If the student fails
the first test their grade is shot be-
cause they cannot drop their worst
iestgrade

The reason why students are caus-
mg a ruckus is becaUse we feel
cheated What the chemistry da-
partment changed its grading policy
for Spi mg 1984. it seemed like it was
singling us out I felt like they had
gone for our throats students in
to?) and had gotten 70 percent of us

I wonder if the “sick and tired"
author's class would have fared any
better Gomg even further would
the author have received "an excel-
lent 'A' " himelf"

Like other people, I would have
received a higher grade if l were
able to drop my lowest test score I
have learned to live with my disap-
pomtment As for the author of
' Sick and Tired." l have the answer
to your problem of being fed up
about hearing the complaints of the
Chemistry 105 course Whenever
you see an article about Chemistry
l05. don't read it You could go even
further and butt out of it It is none
ofyour busmess

A uthorit y 's greed

I want to add my name to those

who have written in criticism of the
manner of handling traffic and
parking at the ("K Medical center
It is grossly unfair and shows a
complete lack of compassion for the
patients. their families and visitors
This is another example of greed oil
the part of those in authority

For those who are not familiar
with the situation. the barrier gates
are set up so that it is necessary to
go through them and take a charge
ticket even to drop a visitor oil at
the front door s 60 cents when you
drop off the visitor and another no
cents when you come back to pick
them up with no parking ii:

The rate is set up so that it is not
Just so cents an hour I was at the
hospital last night for two hours and
so minutes. but I was charged 32 to
I assume there is a 60 cents charge
for passing through the gate"

While I am an occasional vis:tor
what of those people who have «'l‘ll
ically ill family members and are
forced into this situation" Many of
them come from distances with ti—
nanc1al situations such that even

May I suggest that somtsone try to

Warmth of [530

The exuberant services of the lite
ternational Students and Scholars
Office to the foreign students de»
serve our great appreciation The
high effiCIency and utmost kindness
with which lSSt) works. give us a
feeling that we are in the midst of
trmtworthy friends. though we live
far away from our homeland

Most of the foreign students ar-
rive at the UK campus Without hav-
ing much knowledge of the city. cli-
mate conditions. people. locations.

etc Soon after they arrive at the
campus they receive a most cordial
welcome at lssii The latter‘s
timely adv ice to the foreign students
regarding iheit VISA status. their
help 'o hurt a place to live in. their
valuable guidance with regard to
the knowledge of admimstrative
prim-dures and their host family
program etc. are extremely prai-
seyvorthy

What is amazing is that the per

sonnel at lSSO do their Job with an
astonishing amount of devotion and
dedication Thus they offer every
foreign student at UK a friendship
of warmth and kindness. which ev-
eryone needs very badly in the new
atmosphere

Another important activity of
1880 is its close interaction with all
registered foreign students“ organi-
zations in orgamzing the memorable
events of their respective countries,
I place on record of india Students

rendered by [$50 in sponsoring the
"India Night" program last year
