- Biography / History
- Anton Fiala (1887-1948) lived in Bridgeport, Ohio with his wife, Josephine Fiala (1889-1967), and their four children: Anthony (1911-2007), Joseph (1914-1995), Mary (1920-1993) and Sylvia (1921-2006). Anton emigrated from the Czech Republic to the United States in 1907 according to a New York ship log. He served in both World War I and World War II for the United States and owned a grocery store in Ohio.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Anton Fiala account ledgers (dated 1917-1919, 1935; 0.09 cubic feet; 2 folders) comprise of two account ledgers of a grocery store owned by Anton Fiala in Bridgeport, Ohio. The first ledger is from 1917 to 1919 and includes individual accounts and three receipt slips written in Czech. The second ledger from 1935 is a running log of inventory and purchased goods. Baked goods, dry goods, paper products, meats and produce are listed as part of the inventory and includes dates and prices. Slipped inside this ledger are more receipts, order sheets, supplier contacts and a piece of paper containing what appears to be a fortune. The fortune has dates, numbers and descriptions about specific items appearing in dreams and their meanings.
- The Anton Fiala account ledgers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
