- Biography / History
- Mary Steele was born on December 3, 1777, to John and Elenor Steele of Pendleton County, Kentucky. She was John and Elenor' Steele's oldest daughter among six girls and one boy. At twenty-six, she married William Griffing (1781-1853) in 1804; they had five children. Mary Steele lived in northern Kentucky most of her life and following her death on August 26, 1837, was buried at the Gosney-Griffing Cemetery in southeastern Kenton County.
- Scope and Content
- The Mary Steele copybook (dated 1800; 0.15 cubic feet; 1 item) is a homemade, hand-tied book, eight pages in length, which records schoolwork including the rules of algebra and geometry. Additionally, Mary Steele worked a variety of complex story problems, some to nine decimal places. The book also includes religious hymns, homilies, patriotic verse, philosophy, political satire, poetic couplets, and quotes from the Koran. Handwritten with a quill pen, the book is titled "Mary Steele's Book 4th 1800.". The book documents the education of women in Northern Kentucky during the early 1800s.
