Collection Overview
- Scope and Content
- The C.S. Royster papers (dated 1803-1908; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consist of microfilmed copies of letters sent from and to the Talbot and Denton families of Henderson County, Kentucky. The Talbot family letters are all written to Edmund Talbot (1770-1845), a doctor and surveyor in Henderson, Kentucky, and deal largely with business transactions and family news. Several of the letters are from Edmund's brother Isham Talbot, a Frankfort lawyer who served in the Kentucky State Senate (elected in 1812) and the United States Senate (elected in 1815). The Denton family letters primarily concern John Denton, a relation by marriage to Edmund Talbot, and Frederick Denton. They include several written at the close of the Civil War describing condidtions in Tennessee and Western Kentucky during the post-war period. Additionally, the papers include a Kentucky Slave Commission compensation claim made by John Denton in 1864 for an enlisted slave named Ben Cunningham and a printed circular letter from the Louisville Federation of Labor from 1908.
