Alumni IVook

Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1896,
     By GEORGE WHITEFIELD KEMPER,
In the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington.

                           PREFACE.

ROMPTED by a feeling that the Alumni of Kentucky
University have long desired that something be done to
draw them into a closer relationship, and that some means
M as needed whereby they could trace each other through
the ever-changing scenes of life since leaving their Alma Mater, I
have compiled this little volume, with the hope that it will, in a
measure, satisfy these wants. More than this, it seems to me that
the graduates of Kentucky University should have their names
inscribed in a common book, to which present and future children
of their Alma Mater may turn and draw therefrom some valuable
lessons, and gather inspiration from the records of those whose success
in life shall beckon them on to better and nobler deeds.
The task of gathering the data herein contained has been laborious.
I have flooded the mails for long, weary months with inquiries
regarding date of birth, present and past occupation, etc., etc. Some
have been put to dire discomfort searching faded records to unearth
the long-forgotten dates of their entrance into the world; some in
youthful modesty have apologized for their dearth of years and
some have even endeavored to ward off the blade of Father Time
by refusing to name a date so ancient. Some have told me the story
of their lives in few words, while others grew eloquent and
passionate in a series of biographical sketches that would bankrupt
a syndicate to publish. Still others have filed my letters away,
leaving me with no alternative save to write their name and address
as an epitaph upon these pages.
This book then is far from the ideal, yet in its imperfect form it is
presented to you as the best my efforts can make it now. If it gives
you pleasure to read these sketches which I have been compelled
to abbreviate, then am I satisfied.
                                                     G. W. K.
  Lexington, Ky., December 1, 1896.

HISTORICAL SKETCH.

ACON COLLEGE, the earliest literary institution of its
grade established by the Disciples of Christ, began its first
session in Georgetown, Ky., November 7, 1836. Its
charter granted at the next session of the Legislature was
approved February 23, 1837. In the summer of 1839 the institution
was removed to HLrrolsburg, Ky. Beginning its first session in that
place September 2, 1839, it was conducted there until insufficient
means led to its suspension in the summer of 1850. In the winter of
1856 John B. Bowman of Mercer county, entered on the work of
founding a university which should be the successor of Bacon
College. His appeals for financial aid were successful beyond
expectation, and the preparatory department was opened September
21, 1857.
An amended charter, approved January 15, 1858, in which the
provisions of the first charter were greatly extended, and the name
of the institution changed to Kentucky University, was ac-
cepted by the trustees of Bacon College, February 2, 1858. The
collegiate department was opened September 19, 1859, under the
Presidency of Robert Milligan, and was conducted in Harrodsburg
until the summer of 1865, when, after the destruction of the college
building by fire, the University was removed to Lexington, Ky.,
where it succeeded to the property of Transylvania University.
Transylvania Seminary was chartered by the Legislature of
Virginia in May, 1783. The first meeting of its trustees was held
November 10, 1783, near Danville, Ky. Its first session began
February 1, 1785.-i After a few years the Seminary was removed
to Lexington, Ky. Its first session in this place began June 1, 1789.
By an act of the General Assembly of Kentucky, approved
December 22, 1798, Transylvania Seminary and Kentucky Academy
were united January 1, 1799, under the name of Transylvania
University. After an existence of sixty-six years, Transylvania
University was consolidated with Kentucky University by an act
of the Legislature, approved February 28, 1865, and accepted by the
Curators of Kentucky University June 20, 1865.
The first session of Kentucky University in Lexington began
October 2,1865. To the College of Liberal Arts and the Academy,

which had been conducted at Harrodsburg, the College of the Bible
and the College of Law were now added. The office of Regent
of the University was created July 17, 1865. John B. Bowman, the
founder of the University, was elected Regent, which office he held
untilJune, 1878.
In the summer of 1878 the last session of the College of the Bible
under the charter of Kentucky University closed, and the new
College of the Bible, which had been established in 1877, took its
place. This college, organized under its own charter and in
administration and control entirely independent of the University, is
conducted in connection with it.
The office of Regent was discontinued June 12, 1878, at which
time Henry H. White was elected President of the University. He
filled this office until, on his voluntary resignation of the Presidency
in June, 1880, Charles Louis Loos was elected -President, which
position he still occupies.
In 1889, the University contributed to the educational exhibit that
was sent by the Government of the United States to the Exposition
Universelle, in Paris, and in 1893 to the Kentucky exhibit in the
Liberal Arts department of the World's Columbian Exposition in
Chicago. Both of these contributions were honored with awards,
