Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Kentucky Mountain Club was a philanthropic and social organization centered in Lexington, Kentucky, that was active from 1929 until 2013. The Kentucky Mountain Club consisted of members who had largely moved from the mountain counties of eastern Kentucky to Lexington. Beyond offering these members a social hub of people with similar backgrounds, the organization dedicated itself to offering aid to Appalachian Kentucky. Its membership had reached a peak of approximately 1500 members during the mid-twentieth century, but eventually ceased operations at the end of 2013 due to dwindling membership and attendance. The club consisted of an executive board, committees, and a women's auxiliary to assist with event planning. For much of its early years, the club created yearly publications detailing membership, contact information, advertisements, executive rosters, and the club's bylaws. By the 1970s, these publications were instead replaced with a shorter monthly newsletter titled The Mountain Ear. The club worked to fund scholarships for students to attend schools such as Alice Lloyd College, Berea College, Lindsey Wilson College, and Pikeville College. Other projects included funding the creation of a tuberculosis sanitorium and establishing a library.
