- Biography / History
- Joseph Logan Massie (1921-2015) was born to William Kenney Massie and Lucy Crockett Logan in Lexington, Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky and received a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in economics, in 1941 and 1943 respectively. He recieved his PhD from the University of Chicago following his service in World War II. Joseph Massie was a widely known professor and author, publishing the textbook Essentials of Management in 1964 that fundamentally changed the way management was taught and became the leading text in many schools of management. Massie began working at the University of Kentucky and during his tenure he served as the first Chairman of the department of Business Administration, the first Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, the first Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Management, and the Associate Dean of the College of Business and Economics. He also helped to develop three undergraduate programs and established the Doctor of Business Administration degree at the University of Kentucky.

- Scope and Content
- The Joseph L. Massie papers (dated 1907-1996, undated; 0.9 cubic feet; 2 boxes) consist of poetry, monograph research notes, newspaper clippings, and a notebook that document the writings of James L. Massie and William K. Massie. The poetry is all written by William K. Massie, the father of Joseph Massie, and covers topics such as religion and farm life. The notes detail the research completed by James L. Massie for two of his monographs, Anderson's Way: the story of an entrepreneur and Blazer and Ashland Oil: a study in management. Additionally, the collection contains newspaper clippings of various articles printed in the Louisville Courier-Journal, including a series by James Morgan called "In the Path of Napoleon".
