- Biography / History
- Byron Nugent (1842-1908) was born in Marysburgh, Canada to Thomas Nugent and Eleanor Morgan. In 1855, he began his business career in a dry goods store in St. Thomas, Canada, then operated his own store in Mount Vernon, Illinois for three years, before he moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1873 and established B. Nugent & Bro. Dry Goods Company with his two younger brothers. His St. Louis store was a prominent institution that he was able to turn into one of the largest dry goods operations in the Midwest. In 1873, prior to moving to St. Louis, he married Julia Lake (1852-1928) and together the couple had three children, Edwin (1876-1934), Byron (1881-1906), and Julian (1893-1958).
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Byron Nugent letters (dated 1872; 0.04 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises three letters from Byron Nugent to Julia Lake that document their long-distance relationship prior to their marriage, between Illinois and New York in 1872. In the letters, he writes about visiting with friends and family, traveling to visit her and for business, attending parties, plans to go into business in St. Louis, how their future life might look, and plans for their wedding.
- The Byron Nugent letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
