Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Kentucky Park to Park Committee was formed to promote the Kentucky link of a proposed federally funded highway which was to link national parks in the eastern United States. It issued a report, which was sent to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, asking for a grant of $43,000,000 in emergency relief funds to finance the Kentucky link. The parkway was to connect the Shenandoah National Park of Virginia, the Great Smoky Mountians National Park of North Carolina and Tennessee, and Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky.
Scope and Content
The Kentucky Park-to-Park Committee reports (dated 1935; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) contains two copies of the report issued by the Kentucky Park to Park Committee concerning the proposed Eastern Park-to-Park Highway. The report details the committee's views on Kentucky's need for the highway and the federal funds to construct it. The report includes statistical charts supporting those views. One copy contains detailed maps illustrating particular points made in the report, such as one showing the percentage of families in each Kentucky county receiving direct federal relief. The other is illustrated with photographs of the parks which were to be linked, along with other points of interest, such as the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, which would benefit from the proposed highway.
