 SEED INSPECTION IN KENTUCKY, 1947-48
The work of inspection, education and administration has been
carried out under the provisions of the Kentucky Seed Law with
increasingly satisfactory results. The co-operation of farmers and
seedsmen has been excellent, and the trend toward the use of better
seed continues.
During the sixteenth year of the operation of the Seed Law,
May 1, 1947, to April 30, 1948, 7013 lots of seed were inspected and
658 official samples taken. Enforcement officials passed upon all
violations and irregularities.
EXPLANATION OF TABLES
The following tables showing the results of analysis are based
on the number of official samples actually taken and have no refer-
ence to the total number of lots inspected. Table 1 shows the per-
centages of purity and germination stated on the tags and the per-
centages found, a statement of excessive amount of noxious weed
seeds when present, irregularities in tags, and absence of tags. The
variations allowed in purity, germination, and weed seed per ounce
are described on page 21, U. S. D. A. Service and Regulatory An-
nouncements, No. 156, Rules and Regulations Under The Federal
Seed Act, Reissued February, 1946, paragraphs 201.59, 201.60,
201.61. Results within the allowed variation are marked with "—{—"
if above, or "—" if below statement on the official tag.
Variations greater than those allowed constitute violations of
the Kentucky Seed Law, and such results are printed in bold-face
type. In the table, "L" means listed on the tag and "F" means
found in our test. The long dotted line means "not listed. "
Table 2 applies to Fescue only and shows names and addresses
of producers. Other information concerning samples is the same as
shown in Table 1.
Table 3 shows violations found in samples classified according
to wholesale dealers from whom they were purchased.
Table 4 contains a summary to show the kind and number of
violations detected.
Table 5 tabulates, for comparison, the work for the past ten
years. Averages by three year periods show trends of different types
of violations.
