Documenting COVID-19 in the Commonwealth

Name: Jan Stallones
Date of Submission: 2020 July 7

Biography: I was born in Texas in 1957 and am an educator. I've lived and worked in Texas
and California and came here in 2016 when my husband took a position at UK. I graduated from
the University of Texas at Austin and am a literacy specialist. I've worked to bridge practice
between K12 schools and higher education for years. Since coming to Kentucky, I've supervised
student teachers and been a part-time instructor at UK. We are here away from our children and
lifelong friends and feel the isolation of this time quite deeply. This poem reflects a bit of what I
am feeling.

COVID-19 Experience:
Six Feet

No handshakes, or pats on the shoulder
Or hugs

Or, take a taste, or sip of this.

No side by side working at a table

Or sharing coffee and news, leaned in.
No kisses

Touching cheeks-

All of that deferred.

I understand more and more each day that
We are not made for this isolation

And we all yearn deeply to return to one another
