Finals

No holiday!

By: Jason H. Reeves

"Twas the night before

MON DAYKENTUCKY

KERN EL

Anondless

Former
professor
reminisces

Twas the night before
finals.

And all through the
college.

The students were
praying

For last-minute
knowledge.

Most were quite sleepy,

But none touched their
beds.

While visions of essays

Danced in their heads.

Out in the taverns,
A few were still drinking,
And hoping that liquor

Would loosen their
thinking.

In my own room,

i had been pacing,

And dreading exams

i soon would be facing.

My roommate was
speechless,

His nose in his book,

And my comments to
him

Drew unfriendly looks.

I drained all the coffee,

And brewed a new pot,

No longer caring

That my nerves were
shot.

I stared at my notes,

But my thoughts were all
muddy;

My eyes went ablur.

And I just couldn't study.

"Some pizza might
help,"

I said with a shiver,

But each place i called

Refused to deliver.

l'd nearly concluded

That life was too cruel,

With futures depending

0n grades earned in
school.

When all of a sudden

Our door opened wide

And Patron Saint Put-lt-
Off

Ambled inside.

His spirit was careless,
His manner was mellow,
But summoning effort
He started to bellow:

"What kind of student
Would make such a fuss
To toss back at teachers
What they toss at us?

On Cliff Notes! On Crib
Notes!

On Last Year's Exams!

0n Wingit and Slingit.

And Last-Minute Crams!"

His message delivered,

He vanished from sight,

But we heard him
laughing

Outside in the night:

”Your teachers have
peqoed you,

So just do our best...

Happy Finals to All,

And to All, a good test.

Networking important for job market

place to work no easy task

By Scott Sloan

STAFF WRITER

As the school year draws to a close.
many students will finally eam their (le-
grees. end their college careers and enter the
job market.

These students will be confronted with
interviews and bombarded with questions
about resumes. practical experience and
marketable skills.

Through the course of a short inter-
view. many students Will have to showcase
their skills.

Sharon (Thilds. a career counselor at the
UK Career Center. said one of these skills is
communication.

“Certainly. with so much emphasis on
scientific technology. we forget that stu-
dents need interpersonal skills." Childs said.
“interpersonal communication skills are

still very much valued by all employers. oral
and written."

Childs said part of this is the ability to
work with others in accomplishing goals.

“Students should be able to give specific
examples about how they were able to work
as a team. as part of a class project or in a
work setting." Childs said.

While most students have a specific job
in mind. some students leave college with a
degree in a field that offers few jobs.

Peter Berres. the assistant dean of Al-
lied Health Professions and a teacher of UK
101. said these students should concentrate
on enhancing their skills,

“There‘s a certain set of skills you can
apply to a number of different jobs."

For students still looking for a job.
(‘hilds advised establishing a networking
system.

"Networking is letting everyone know
out there that you're looking for a job."
(‘hilds said. "It takes a lot of persistence
and patience. delving into all kinds of
possible leads."

While networking will help many grad-
uating seniors. some are planning to return
to classrooms in the fall.

Krista Metzer. an accounting senior.
will graduate with a bachelor's degree in
less than two weeks but plans to attend grad-
uate school at Ohio State University.

Some may question her decision. but for
Metzer. attending school is not an option.

“It's a requirement of my major that I
have to have five years of school.” she said.

MeUer plans to work toward a master's
degree.

Other UK graduating seniors will also
earn degrees but are choosing to put them
aside for the moment to look at other
options.

Kerry Lewis. a marketing senior. is
planning to attend a seminary in Texas but
said his marketing degree will still help
him.

“I'll have to work some kind of job so
hopefully it will help me with that but it's
not something I‘m going to focus on."
he said.

Tbose parking
tickets you have
accumulated over
the years can

keep you irom
receiving your
diploma.

lllCl IOIECEK I
Pnoto EDITOR

What's the buzz? If you owe money for late
books, tickets your diploma could be delayed

By Katie Kramer
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

If paying for a cap and
gown is all seniors are worry-
ing about when it comes to
graduating. they need to
think again. The times they
parked illegally at the dorms.
or that library copy of Moby
Dick that has been in the
back seat of their car since
sophomore year could come
back to haunt them. Any kind
of fees owed to the University
can keep an excited senior
from receiving their diploma.

There are several fee
holds that can be placed on a
student‘s graduation. but the
four most pertinent to gradu-
ation are fees to the dean of
students. financial aid. park-
ing and library. said Cleo
Price. associate registrar at
UK.

“There is no universal
deadline set by the l‘niversi-
ty for the payment of these
fees." he said. “But each de-
partment probably has its

own deadlines."

Should a student not pay
their fees at the appropriate
deadline. there is still a way
to get some use out of that
cap and gown. Even if the
checking account is empty by
graduation day. a senior can
still walk with their Class-
mates. Since diplomas are not
given out on graduation day.
a perspective graduate has a
four to six week period after
graduation in which to pay
off their fees before the diplo-
ma is ordered. Price said.
There is no policy stating
that a student in debt to the
University cannot walk with
their class. they just will not
receive their diploma until
all has been paid.

This discrepancy
ered some students.

"I would hope that people

can‘t pay their fees
would still receive their
diploma sometime.“ said
Stephanie Martin. a business
sophomore. “But I don‘t think
that they should walk with

both-

w h o

the class if there is any doubt
that they won‘t see that
diploma."

Stuffing those parking
tickets into a glove compart-
ment doesn‘t seem like such a
good idea anymore when stu-
dents realize that one parking
ticket could keep them from
graduating.

Any outstanding parking
violations can stop a diploma.
said Don Thornton. director
of parking at UK.

Thornton said he hoped.
however. that one unpaid
parking ticket would not keep
a student from graduating.

“That six week period be-
tween walking and actual
graduation is plenty of time
to get the money in." Thorn-
ton said.

At least an overdue fee of
twenty-five cents won‘t keep
anyone from graduating. The
library has a policy that only
the accumulation of $20 in
fees will prevent the recep-
tion of a diploma. said Diana
Steinberg. the overdue super—
visor at William T. Young
Library.

The library has a dead-
line for payment of fees. but
the first indication that a
hold might be placed on a stuv
dent's graduation is usually
at registration time.

"If a student does not
have a hold placed on their
registration. they are usually
OK by the time graduation
comes around." Steinberg
said. stressing the word
“usually."

Of course. for many stu-
dents. getting rid of debts be-
fore they get close to graduat-
ing is not a bad idea.

"I am glad that I found
out about this now.” says
Marsha Barhorst. an educa-
tion junior.

"It‘s going to take some
time to pay off all my parking
tickets."

That's the way it goes: Former UK Spanish professor carries on after

retirement with his work, his pet turtle and memories of teaching

By Ashley York

ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR

For some students, finals
week culminates the end of a se-
mester. For graduating seniors.
it is the end of a journey.

More than three decades
ago. John Keller finished finals
week at UK.

But the completion of his
undergraduate and master‘s de-
grees in Spanish wasn't the end
of his journey.

It was just the beginning.

After UK. Keller went to the
University of North Carolina to
get his PhD. He taught there un-
til 1967. One day that year. then
UK President John Oswald
called Keller to otfer him a job as
the director of the School of Let-
ters and Languages. as well as
the chairman for the Depart-
ment of Spanish, Oswald also
asked Keller to bring a stafi' with
him. And he did. Keller said he
recruited five professors and 25
graduate students to serve as
teaching assistants at UK.

According to Keller. when he
first came to UK the Department
of Spanish was suffering, By the
early '705 it ranked among the

top-20 programs in the nation.

"I used to lie awake at night
and think of what I've done and I
think of that." Keller said.

He taught at UK until he
was 70 years old. If it had been
tip to Keller. he would have con-
tinued teaching. But UK has an
age policy that mandates profes-
sors retire at that age.

"It makes sense." he
laughed. “But professors should
be able to go on."

That’s the way it goes. he
said.

Today. the 83-yearold spends
most of his days at his home writ
ing and researching in his study.
Currently. he is writing two books
simultaneously. If] Were Tarzan
and The ii’andering Jews. Keller
said he writes two books concur
rently in order to keep his mind
fresh. He also serves as editor-in»
chief of the I'niversity Press's
Studies in Romance languages.

"This is the only official po-

sition l have." he said.
Despite an “early retire-
ment" as he calls it. Keller‘s

memories of the University will
never fade. He says his Uncle
.lohn would have paid for him to
attend any college in the United

States. but he chose to stay in
Lexington and attend l'K.

He still keeps in touch with
the l'niversity by reading the
Kernel, He has read the newspa-
per since he was a student. He
even had his mother send it to
him when he was seiying in the
army during World War 1.

"I'm glad I stayed. I'm afraid
I would have gotten lonely

Loneliness is an unknown
concept to Keller. His research
keeps him company. Surround
ed by hundreds of books and the
pet turtle he found 10 years ago
on the highway somewhere be-
tween Richmond and Lexington.
Kellens mind stays busy ponder-
ing questions and thoughts It
doesn't seem that he has forgot
ten anything

Like the debate over
Christopher Columbus ethnici-
ty Keller swears that Columbus
is a Spaniard not an Italian,

In one of his most recent
books. Isabel/a and the Sailor. he
explains Columbus" nativity.
Keller said he wrote the book be»
cause Americans hayi- a nega-
tive image about Isabella and he
hopes to offer the nation a differ-
ent perspective of her, The book

will publish in Madrid soon.

Being a published writer is
only one of Keller's many accotn
plishtnents. One that stands out
fondly in his mind was when
King Juan Carlos knighted hint
in the Order of Queen Isabella in
1984. as a result of authoring
more than 40 books abut Spanv
ish literature.

For his etfoits. Keller ac-
quired a very expensive book
and he keeps it close. The book.
Book of the Knights Zlfrtr. is a
facsimile valued at several thou
sand dollars It is a replica ofthe
original owned by French Em»
peror Napoleon. Keller said it
was most likely stolen from a li-
brary in Madrid.

But what will never be
stolen from him are his accom-
plishments and memories.

"Most people hate to be for-
gotten. so perhaps my new ca-
reer Will keep my memory
alive." Keller said in his study.
which houses shelves of books
about romantic languages and
classical literature. The pet turtle
sits in an aquarium among the
books looking ahead dreamily.
Perhaps remembering the time
Keller rescued him from the per
ils of a highway and nursed him
back to health with tomatoes.

The two keep each other
cotnpany on their journey
through life.
