- Thomas Vannatta (1844-1908) was a farmer and merchant in Clays Village and Christianburg in Shelby County, Kentucky. Vannatta married Sallie E. Newton in 1870.
- Scope and Content
- The Thomas Vannatta general store records (dated 1873-1876; 0.23 cubic feet; 3 items) consist of two ledgers and one daybook documenting the operation of Thomas Vannatta's general store in Shelby County, Kentucky. The two ledgers are organized by customer name and record the transaction date, settlement, and items purchased. Vannatta noted African-American customers by writing "(Col.)" or "col." after their names. These customers include George Brown, Joshua Chambers, Henry Clay, Daniel Ford, George Lawson, Bill Lawson, Bob Keton, Squire Watson, and a Shang Long who may have been Asian.
