- Biography / History
- Augustus E. Woodward (1830-1860) was a farmer who lived in Graves County, Ky. He died of typhoid fever in Pike County, Arkansas, while returning home with his family after a visit to Texas.
- Scope and Content
- The Augustus E. Woodward diary (1851-1860, bulk 1856; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consists of a typewritten transcription of Woodward's diary, which documents the operation of his farm in Graves County, Ky., including his crops and his use of slave labor. Much of this diary deals with the conditions of Woodward's crops which included such items as tobacco, cotton, wheat, rye, oats, corn, beans, peas, potatoes, rice and watermelons. Woodward describes the daily tasks accomplished on the farm and mentions the sicknesses, deaths and births of his slaves. Also reported are the activities of the family, such as visits with friends and relatives, and trips to Paducah, Ky., Mayfield, Ky., and Maury City, Tenn., among other places.
