ABBEY OF GETHSEMANI

TRAPPI ST, KENTUCKY

Dear Victor:

Many thanks for your note and for Lexi's good letter wnich I
return herewith. Yes, I knew that Maritain was goming and I am delighted
that he will be able to. I hope nothing gets in the way, as I look forwar.
very much to being with him for a little while.

As to you, yes, by all means let us plan on something in September.
The first baturday is bad for me. The 10th, 17th and 24th are all right,
and maybe the 17th would be the best. However, any of those three will
do. Just drop me a line when, and I will expect to meet you at the
usual time.

Have we ever spoken of Thomas Mann? I do not recall. I have
never really been able to get into him, but I see that I must quite
probabmy read Dr Faustus. Do you know it? It is apparently a horrifying
indictment of modern ant and culture and probably a hair-raising book to
read. I wonder if Carolyn couldget it for me. If you want to look at it
before she sends it on, fine. Or perhaps you would prefer to look it ovef
in German.

Does she perhaps have in the library any poems of Miguel Hernandez?
A modern Spanish poet who died in one of Franco's jails. I am very im-
pressed by him.Not to be confused with Memendez,—— a Peruvian.

With all best wishes always and blessings
in Christ,

1'

Ma.

As fpr my wateland life, well a hermit is one who lives in the wasteland
as an outsider but my cultural desolation is not total. There are books.
