Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- George Dennison Prentice (1802-1870) journalist and poet, was born in New London County, Connecticut, to Rufus and Sarah Stanton. After graduating from Brown University in 1823, he joined the bar and briefly practiced law. In 1827 he became a journalist and in 1828 began editing the New England Review. He wrote the Biography of Henry Clay in 1830 and as a result was invited to run the new Whig newspaper the Louisville Daily Journal. During the Civil War, Prentice remained a staunch Unionist despite his two sons joining the Confederate army. He retired from the Louisville Daily Journal in 1868. His works include The Poems of George D. Prentice and Prenticeana.
- Scope and Content
- The collection consists of a handwritten poem by George D. Prentice entitled "To Gertrude". Additionally, the collection includes an undated newspaper clipping explaining that the poem was written for Gertrude Smith, the daughter of D. Howard Smith who was a friend of Prentice. Prentice wrote the poem for her autograph album.
