- Biography / History
- Earl D. Wallace was born October 19, 1898, in Grays, KY and raised in London, KY with his siblings by their widowed mother. He attended the Sue Bennett Memorial School, where his mother worked, from elementary to high school. He was an exemplary student and star basketball player. He attended the College of Engineering at the Kentucky State School (now University of Kentucky) from 1917 until his graduation in 1921. Following graduation, he worked as a gas-line surveyor in Kentucky and later searching for oil in the bayous of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Central and South America. Between 1921 and 1967, Wallace worked for many different oil, petroleum, and gas companies. He was Manager and Director of Petroleum Exploration, Inc.; President of Peoples Gas Company of Kentucky; Vice President and Director of The Standard Oil Company (Ohio); President of Sohio Petroleum Company; and Consultant for the investment banking firm Dillon, Read & Company. During this time Wallace married his first wife, Mary Frances Wilson, and had two children with her – Betty and Earl D. Wallace, Jr. Later he married his second wife, Jane Blount. In 1960, Wallace was approached by Harry Tucker to join a meeting with others who were interested in restoring the Shaker Village. These meetings continued through 1961 where they began to gather donations to purchase the land where the Shaker buildings stood. In August 1961, Wallace was elected Chairman and Chief Executive of Shakertown at Pleasant Hill, Inc. Wallace was recognized many times for his efforts in business and preservation. Among his accolades he was named Kentuckian of the Year in 1964, awarded the Governor's Medallion in 1982, and received an honorary doctor of law degrees from the University of Kentucky, Transylvania University, and Centre College. Through the creation of the Roundtable at Shakertown, Wallace was also able to open discussion about issues plaguing Kentucky, from education to economics. Wallace was intimately involved in Shakertown, staying chairman of the board and chief executive for nearly thirty years until his death in January 1990.
