Scope and Content
The John Stout account books (dated 1830-1899; 0.09 cubic feet; 2 items) comprise two account books recording the transactions of both the hemp industry and horse breeding industry by a business man named John Stout and his parents throughout the nineteenth century. John Stout and his business partners, John Nut and a man with the last name Bulletin, kept a log of their hemp business transactions from 1830 to 1865. This log, spread out across the two ledgers, included their cash received, bills payable, and their property accounts. They also had a section for accounts that were open with multiple doctors that purchased their products. From 1857 to 1899, the first account book contains a log of mares bred at an unnamed farm. The breeding log is very detailed and contains the names, dates, descriptions, and owners of both the mares and foals.
The John Stout account books are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
