Collection Overview

Biography / History
Farmer, engineer. Howard Evans, a native of Lebanon, Ky, was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and a prominent engineer and farmer. His wife, Catherine Peter Evans, was a granddaughter of Dr. Robert Peter, a nineteenth-century Lexington physician, scientist, and professor in the Medical Department of Transylvania and in the Louisville Medical School. Dr. Peter married Frances Dallam in 1835; among their children were Robert Jr, Benjamin Dudley, Frances Dallam and Johanna.
Scope and Content
The Catherine and Howard Evans papers (dated 1728-1968, undated; 12.76 cubic feet; 26 boxes, 1 item, 1 folder) primarily consist of the papers of the Peter family of Lexington. These include the papers of Dr. Robert Peter and his wife, Frances Dallam, including the correspondences of Peter, his brother Arthur, and their friend William Shinn, dating from 1828-1865; correspondence, notebooks, and memorabilia related to Peter's 1834 trip to Europe to purchase equipment for Transylvania; Peter's personal financial records; correspondence with his wife, Frances Dallam Peter, and other family members; notebooks containing travel experiences and scientific observations; and plans related to the remodeling of the Winton Estate.
Also included in the Peter family papers are two Civil War-era diaries, one kept by Dr. Peter's daughter, Frances Dallam Peter, and the other by Miriam Gratz, a friend of Frances'. Also included are letters from Peter's sons, Benjamin and Robert, both of whom were involved in gold mining in Colorado. Papers of the Dallam family include a 1794-1795 diary kept by Maj. William S. Dallam during a year-long trip to Europe; Dallam's correspondence with his father, Richard Dallam, which dates from 1802-1820; other correspondence of Richard, William S., and Letitia Paca Dallam; and family business records from 1792-1830. These papers frequently relate to the family's ownership and sale of slaves. Other materials present include wash drawings, cost estimates, and specifications by architect Thomas Lewinski for a villa to be built in Lexington for the Peter family; and correspondence and business records of Samuel Meredith and other Meredith family members.
Additionally, the collection contains the personal papers of Howard and Catherine Peter Evans, including manuscript short stories; genealogical information on the Peter, Dallam, Dudley, Frazier, Garland and Gratz families; and correspondence dating from 1915-1941 related to the sale of papers from the Winton Estate Library. Transcripts of family diaries made by Catherine Evans are found throughout the collection.
