This collection consists of materials from Maurice A. Clay, a physical education professor at UK. Materials include papers, notebooks, and photographs pertaining to the U.S. Army Air Force physical education program during and after World War II. In addition, materials from and about Kentucky writer, Jesse Stuart. Also information about Oliver S. Clay through articles he wrote in "Auctioneer."

Collection Overview

Biography / History
Maurice A. Clay was coordinator of undergraduate professional physical education at UK from the 1940s until his retirement in 1976. He was a former president of the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation. In the early 1960s, he was a senior Fulbright lecturer at the National University of Colombia in Bogota. Clay was director of physical education at the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas, before he worked at UK. He also had been a consultant to the American School Foundation in Mexico City and the Peace Corps. Mr. Clay had been executive director of Omicron Delta Kappa national college leadership honor society. He also was a former president of the UK Faculty Club and had served on the board of Spindletop Hall. At one time, he coached boys' basketball at the old University High School. He also had served on the board of the Northside Neighborhood Association. He was in the Army Air Corps during World War II and later was in the Air Force Reserves. Mr. Clay grew up in Waldron, Ind., and received degrees from Kentucky Wesleyan College in Winchester and UK.

Scope and Content
The Maurice A. Clay Papers contain six boxes of professional and personal material from 1939-1997, the bulk of which being from 1943-1965 when Clay was a physical education instructor in the U.S. Army Air Force and who would later teach at the University of Kentucky. Papers include training aids, manuals, class syllabi, reports, tests, charts, and photographs. In addition, there are three desconstructed notebooks containing various materials on physical fitness at Army Air Force bases, including Orangeburg, S.C. All papers were kept in the orignal order of the notebooks.
Photographs that were loose within the notebooks were placed in box 3 and numbered by the original order from the notebook. All photographs have been numbered by the original order of the notebooks. Photographs have stamp, "Official Photograph U.S. Air Force."
0000ua049:3:1-0000ua049:3:32 are photographs from the first notebook. These photos were loose and placed orginially before page one of the notebook. These photographs include the U.S. Army Air Force participating in a variety of physical activities including football, races, punching bags, pull-ups, tug-o-war, rope climbing, basketball, archery, baseball, volleyball, and tennis.
0000ua049:3:33-0000ua049:52 are loose photographs from the "Pictures and Diagrams," section of the second notebook. These photographs include the U.S. Army Air Force participating in a variety of physical activities including tennis, marching, football, baseball, basketball, swimming, and equipment used.
The collection also contains a series on famed Kentucky writer, Jesse Stuart. Materials include correspondence between Clay and Stuart, Christmas cards from the Stuart family, short works by Stuart, and various materials written about him.
Other materials include a drawing of the Taylor Educational Building, articles by Clay's father, Oliver S. Clay in the "Auctioneer," blank metal Sullivan awards, and swimming medals in box 4.

Series I. contains five subseries pertaining to the U.S. Army Air Force Physical Education. All notebooks were deconstructed for preservation purposes, but papers were kept in original order. Photographs inside notebooks were transferred to box 3.
