 QUARTERLY BULLETIN I
. Introduction to Frontier Nursing Service (FNS)
_ Mary Breckinridge spent her early years in many parts of the
world — Russia, France, Switzerland and the British Isles. After
the death of her two children, she abandoned the homebound life
expected of women of her class to devote herself to the service
of others, particularly mothers and children.
Mrs. Breckinridge established the (FNS) in Leslie County, Ken-
tucky in 1925, as a private charitable organization serving an area
of 700 square miles. It was the first organization in America to
use nurses trained as midwives under the direction of a single
medical doctor/obstetrician, based at their small hospital in Hyden.
Originally the staff was composed of nurse—midwives trained in
England. They traveled on horseback and on foot to provide qual-
ity prenatal and childbirth care in the client’s own home.
Today, Mrs. Breckinridge’s legacy extends far beyond Eastem
Kentucky. FNS, Inc., is the parent holding company for Mary
Breckinridge Healthcare, Inc., Frontier Nursing Healthcare, Inc.,
which includes six rural healthcare clinics; Mary Breckinridge
Home Health Agency and the Frontier School of Midwifery and
Family Nursing which offers a Master of Science in Nursing de-
gree with tracks as a Nurse-Midwife, Family Nurse Practitioner
and Women’s Healthcare Nurse Practitioner.
Mary Breckinridge’s home, The Big House, located at Wendover,
is a licensed Bed & Breakfast Inn. For more information or reser-
vations, call 606-672-23 17 or e—mail fnstours@yahoo.com. You

Such extremely exciting developments at the FNS has made me
anxious to update our supporters.
We have now completed numerous improvements within our hos-
pital and clinics. The addition of high level providers, support staff, .
equipment and renovations have resulted in more than a 48% in-
crease in hospital inpatient utilization coupled with a 30% increase y
in utilization of our clinics. We are now moving forward with a .
complete renovation of the Obstetrics Ward at Mary Breckinrid ge
Hospital to realign our midwifery service through the Mary
Breekinridge Center for Women and Children. We are, in fact, l
remaining true to our mission and the heritage which has been left
to us by our Founder.
We continue to witness significant growth with increased enroll-
ment and new programs at the Frontier School of Midwifery and I
Family Nursing. Most interesting is our pilot ADN to MSN Pro- ,
gram which will allow many in our region who carry an associate `
degree in nursing to fast track into our master’s programs. l
We continue to depend upon the support of our faithful donors to
be able to continue "The Journey". Thanks to you all. ,

· V The Courier Program
by Michael Claussen
7 Wendover/Development Coordinator
The Courier Program continues to offer valuable assistance for
FNS projects while it provides exciting volunteer and shadowing
opportunities to its participants. Susan Weller from Boston served
as a Courier from January 2 to March 25, 2006, and Jennifer
i Weissman served from March 12 to June 3, 2006. The following
are excerpts from their reports:
"The overall organization of the Program has very special
strengths. The history and tradition of the Program, the true gen-
erosity and welcoming attitudes of the staff and people in the
community, and the opportunity to participate in a variety of ac-
tivities were invaluable strong points. In addition, the chance to
shadow a wide range of talented providers is a unique opportu-
nity."
"I was involved with three different volunteer projects in the com-
munity. I made home visits to patients through Hospice of the
Bluegrass, tutored at the Adult Learning Center and helped with
the Leslie County Animal Shelter. FNS has also given me the
opportunity to shadow various providers who graciously opened
their offices to me and shared insight into their professions. Dur-
ing June, I will begin the long process of applying to medical
schools. The exposure to all aspects of healthcare that I gained
as a Courier have been important to me in feeling comfortable
with my commitment to a future in medicine. I would like to ex-
press my gratitude to FNS and those who make the Courier Pro-
gram possible, as it has been an invaluabe experience."
We are in the process of scheduling Couriers for the summer and
p_ intend to continue to refine this outstanding Program so that it will
always remain a dynamic experience.
