- KWIC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The first state collegiate championship for women began in 1972. Held on
the Eastern Campus, the first tournament drew a then record number of
entries, eleven. The second year the championship was held at the University of
Kentucky. Eastern and Murray finished 1-2 in '72 and ’75 and represented
KWIC at the Regional Championships. In ’74 the tournament was hosted by
Morehead.
1975 saw the most dramatic changes in KWIC tournament structure. KWIC V
sponsored two divisional championships for the first time, one of the first states `
in the U.S. to make such an advancement. The University Division was held at
Murray. Schools with undergraduate enrollments (women) of 5,000 or less play
in the College Division while those over 5.000 participate in the University.
1980 marks not only a new decade but another structural change. The AIAW is
now divided into three divisions, I, II, III.
