Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Kevin Dearinger earned his bachelor's degree in English from the University of Kentucky in 1973. While at UK, he began his acting career on the stage of UK's Guignol Theatre, starring in a production of George Bernard Shaw's Androcles and the Lion. Dearinger performed on Broadway and participated in numerous national and international tours. Dearinger has performed on the stages of many prestigious regional theatre companies, including Goodspeed Opera, The Huntington, and Paper Mill Playhouse. He is a member of both the Actors' Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild.
- Upon retirement, Dearinger wrote The Bard in the Bluegrass: Two Centuries of Shakespearean Performance in Lexington, Kentucky (2007). During his research, he acquired much of the material that forms the John Arthur Dearinger Memorial Theatre Collection, dedicated to the memory of his father, John Arthur Dearinger. John Arthur Dearinger was a faculty member in the University of Kentucky College of Engineering from 1957 until 1991.
- Scope and Content
- The John Arthur Dearinger Memorial Theatre Collection (dated 1826-2016, undated; 26 cubic feet; 40 boxes, 13 oversize boxes, 1 map folder) comprises over 3,600 items of theater-related materials accumulated first as part of research for Kevin Dearinger's book, The Bard in the Bluegrass: Two Centuries of Shakespearean Performance in Lexington, Kentucky (McFarland, 2007). The collection later expanded to include items on the broader topic of theater not just Shakespearean items. The collection includes photographs and prints of 19th and 20th-century actors and theatrical productions (including musical theatre and opera); autographs; correspondence; scrapbooks; playbills; posters; window cards; advertising; and other artifacts including items such as cigar boxes, shoes, soap, and card games. Also included are publications on theater and a group of 78 rpm recordings of early 20th-century actors reading from Shakespearean plays.
