Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program is a five week, intensive study program attended by the brightest students in the state. It invites a number of the most promising high school juniors to attend the academic gathering during which they will come together on a college campus to study, discuss, and research alongside faculty and other academics. Tuition, room, and board are all covered by the state as a result of partnerships with local corporations and foundations. The program is completed without any grades or credits given, with the main goals being to further educate the scholars and foster a love of learning within them. Faculty chosen from the ranks of high school, college, and university instructors work with the chosen students, teaching courses focused on broadening the students' perspective and facilitating personal growth and development. Key points of the programs curriculum are critical thinking, adaptability, and creativity. It is the hope of the program that the students, after their experience, will return to their respective schools and act as "ambassadors of excellence", inspiring their classmates to reach toward a higher level of academic success. Ruth Maslin, of Richmond, Kentucky, was one of those 300 exceptional students invited to take part in the 1984 iteration of the program at Eastern Kentucky University.
