- Biography / History
- The Fiel family of Dayton, Ohio included William Augustus Fiel (1873-1949), his wife Nellie Woods (1878-1968), and their three children: William Harry (1902-1982), Russell J. (1903-1954), and Catherine Eileen (b. 1916). William A. and Nellie were married in 1900. William A. worked as a clerk and traveling auditor for the American Express Co., both of his sons would also work for American Express Co., both as claim agents. William H. married Doris Elizabeth Scott (1901-1998) in 1943, and Russell married Mary Kuntz (1906-1970). It is unclear if either couple had children.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Fiel family letters (dated 1916-1957, 1982, undated; 0.06 cubic feet; 6 folders) comprise letters sent between the members of the Fiel family of Dayton, Ohio in the early twentieth century. The letters discuss working in an office, spending time with friends, going on dates, getting married, raising children, playing in a baseball league, personal health, travel, visits from and plants to visit relatives, receiving letters from friends and family, dealing with family members working for the same company, going fishing, finances, and efforts in finding a home to rent. Additionally, there is an essay written by one of the Fiel family members about Belgium's involvement in World War I.
- The Fiel family letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
