Collection Overview

Biography / History
Eugene Hester Thompson, Jr. (1914-1998), was the son of Eugene H. Thompson (1882-1962) and Louise Robinson Thompson both of Cadiz, Trigg County, Kentucky. The Thompson family originally came to Kentucky in the early 1800s from Virginia. Eugene Thompson, Jr. attended Henry Clay High School and the University of Kentucky graduating from the latter with a graduate degree in French in 1939. During the early 1930s he developed a lifelong interest in Esperanto--an international language created with the intention of providing a second language which would defeat world-wide communication barriers. As late as 1991 he was instrumental in helping host the national Esperanto convention at Meredith College, North Carolina. Employed (1939-1941) as an instructor of French and Spanish at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Winchester, Kentucky, Thompson declared himself a conscientious objector in 1941 after the institution of the pre-World War II draft. As a result he lived and worked in several Civilian Public Service Camps which were established in 1941 as a means of providing alternative public service for conscientious objectors (classification 4-E). The camps were run and operated by several civilian religious organizations. The men worked six day weeks, nine hours a day at hard labor. The government paid for their laundry, room, and board, and they were given a monthly allowance of $2.50. There was no allotments for dependents. The American Friends Service Committee, an arm of the Quaker church, in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service operated the camps in which Thompson was stationed (1942-1943 at Camp Buck Creek, CPS #19, Marion, North Carolina and at Camp Antelope, CPS #37, Coleville, California during 1943-1944). WWII created a critical shortage of workers in psychiatric hospitals and as a result Thompson was sent to work at a mental institution, the Eastern State Hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia in 1944. He returned to civilian life in April, 1946.
After the war he served as an instructor/professor of French at Appalachian State Teachers College (1946), the University of Kansas City (1947-1948), and at Guilford College (1948-1979). Eugene H. Thompson, Jr. married Lucille Hope Newton (1916- ) of Lexington in 1951.
Scope and Content
The Eugene H. Thompson, Jr. papers (dated 1868-1965, 1910-1965; 10.24 cubic feet; 9 record storage boxes, 3 document boxes, 1 oversize box, 9 photograph boxes) comprises correspondence, newspaper clippings, papers, and publications that detail the Civilian Public Service during World War II, the pacifism movement in the United States, language studies, and Eugene Thompson's family. During the period that Thompson served with the Civilian Public Service (1941-1946) there is extensive correspondence between Thompson and his parents, his friends, and with acquaintances from other camps including incoming letters and carbon copies of outgoing communications. There are also runs of camp literature including the CPS Newsletter (1943-1945), and newsletters from several camps such as Castner, Puerto Rico (Camp #43), Powellsville, Maryland (Camp #52), Gorham, New Hampshire (Camp #53), Trenton, North Dakota (Camp #94), State Hospital, Cherokee, Iowa (Camp #131), and Minersville, California (Camp #148) in addition to newsletters from Thompson's own camps numbers 19 and 37. The collection also contains U.S. Forest Service literature. Finally, there are copies of several statements or letters written by men who became disillusioned with CPS and who left the camps to spend the remainder of the war in prison. Thompson's tenure in Virginia is represented by issues of The Attendant; a report of an investigation at the hospital, which resulted in substantial changes in its administration (1943); and hospital literature outlining standard operating procedures, basic philosophy of care and treatment, and standards of professional conduct.
Beyond the Civilian Public Service, the collection includes publications and other literature on the peace movement, pacifism, on war resistance, on conscientious objectors, on conscription, and on religion. Major organizations include the American Friends Service Committee and the Fellowship of Reconciliation. The papers contain range of documents and publications that focus on Thompson's language studies, predominantely focusing on Esperanto but also includes French, Spanish, and German. In addition, there are several files of correspondence to and from Thompson for the period 1946-1960 including a run of letters (1947-1949) from his future wife Lucille Newton about post-war events at the University of Kentucky. The collection contains four photographs of Buck Creek Camp. The majority of the photographs consist of unidentified family photographs. Finally, the collection also contains the business records of Eugene H. Thompson, Sr. and records of Mrs. Louise Thompson's personal correspondence.
