Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Bland Ballard (1819-1879) was a United States federal judge. Born in Shelby County, Kentucky, Ballard spent most of his adult life in Louisville, Kentucky.
- William Preston (1816-1887) was a lawyer, diplomat, and politician born near Louisville, Kentucky, in 1816. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1838 and practiced law in Louisville until the outbreak of the Mexican War. During the war he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He served as Minister to Spain from 1858 until 1861. In August of 1861 he joined the Confederate Army, becoming a brigadier general. Jefferson Davis appointed Preston as the Confederate Minister to Mexico in January 1864.

- The collection consists of a letter from William Preston to Rutherford B. Hayes concerning the possible appointment of Bland Ballard to the United States Circuit Court for the Sixth Circuit.
