FOREWORD
Voluntary organizations of civilians for community service purposes
may be, and it is hoped will bo, of the greatest assistance to the de-
fense of the Nation.
Organizations of this type are peculiarly American in their spirit,
and have been, perhaps, one of the outstanding contribution of the United
States to community work of all sorts. The free and individualistic
spirit of the people of our country has led them to organize all manner
of clubs, associations and lodges in order to help one another and to be
of assistance to the general public. New that we have come upon diffi-
cult days, it is well for us to measure the human resources which have
been mobilized already into such organizations. The Directory of Commun-
ity Service Organizations in Georgia accomplishes_this purpose._“Through
the`Historical Records Survey of the WPA, the Federal Government is now
in a position to supply to legitimately interested agencies and indivi-
duals, a list of the existing groups already organized, together with
their purposes, activities and interests.
At any time such a listing should be most useful. Knowledge may be
gleaned therefrom which may be of great assistance to future planning
o9 all sorts of programs, particularly those connected with service to
the communities concerned. From it the local organizations, themselves,
can discover what the resources of their own communities may be, and in
what way they can best mutually cooperate for the benefit of the general
public and for one another.
But at a time, such as the present, when our whole Nation faces the
gravest dangers of its existence, and when all our thoughts must be turn-
ed to total organization for defense, a directory of this sort is parti-
qularly appropriate. Local civilian defense agencies will be enabled to
discharge their functions more efficiently by a knowledge of what groups
are able und willing to do which particular things. They also should be
greatly encouraged in their efforts for planning defense of civilians by
seeing to what extent voluntary organizations of civilians have already
become interested in and begun to plan for takin: their part in defense
efforts. The Georgia Council for National Defense, therefore, wishes to
express its approval of the publication of this series of volumes by the
Georgia Historical Records Survey. We very greatly appreciate the fore-
sight of the Federal government in preparing such a compilation of data,
and feel sure that it will prove most useful in the promotion of defense
efforts throughout the State of Georgia.

The Historical Records Survey was organized by Dr. Luther H. Evans,
who served as Director of the Legislative Reference Service cf the Li-
brary of Congress. He was succeeded on March l, 1940 by Sargent B. Child,
who had served in the capacity of Field Supervisor since the inaugura-
tion of the Survey. The Survey operates under the Research and Records
Programs, Division of Community Service Programs, Work Projects Adminis-
tration, of which Mrs. Florence Kerr, Assistant Commissioner is in charge.
The Directory of Community Service Organizations in Georgia is based
on data_gathered during—the summer and fall of lQ4lT—when the Survey made
an inventory of such organizations at the request of the State Council of
National Defense, the State Flanning Board, and numerous other State and
local agencies. The primary arrangement of the Directory is by towns,
listed alphabetically, the secondary arrangement is by organizations, list-
ed alphabetically save where two or three are mutually dependent upon one
another. The entries show name of the organization; its affiliation; ad-
dress, foundation date; chief officers, with their addresses, telephone
numbers and term of office; the membership; and the purpose, activities
and interests of the organization.
Due to the great number of community service organizations in Georgia,
it has been found advisable to publish the Directory in a series of vol-
UHGS, each devoted to one section of the State. The present volume,
dealing with Southwestern Georgia, is the first of this series. Each has,
for its frontispiece, a map of that area of the State covered therein,
showing the towns listed, together with the major highways and railroads,
it also contains one index of the listed organizations by type of present
activity, and another by type of interest.
Acknowledgement is due to each and all of the thousands of organiza-
tions which supplied the information presented in the Directory, and to
scores of newspapers throughout the State which announced the purpose of
the field survey to the public and encouraged cooperation. Acknowledge- _
ment is due also to the administrative and supervisory staffs of the
Community Service Division of the WPA, who undertook the field inventory:
a task too creat for the staff of the Georgia historical Records Survey
alone. The Directory was prepared for publication in the State Office
of the Survey.
The publications of the Historical Records Survey are usually issued
for free distribution to certain State and local public officials, public
libraries in Georgia, and to a limited number of libraries and govern-
mental agencies outside the State. This Directory of Community Service
Organizations, however, due to its special nature, will be restricted in
circulation at the discretion of the State Council of National Defense.
