Collection Overview

Biography / History
The first courses in drama and oral interpretation at the University were organized in the 1920s by the Department of English in response to the student group the "Strollers," who produced their first play in 1910, and the national Little Theatre Movement. Also in the early 1920s, Carol Sax, an art professor, organized the University of Kentucky Romany Theatre, under the direction of the English Department. The Theatre and the rest of the English Department was housed in the former African American Consolidated Baptist Church and supplementary structures located on Winslow and Euclid streets, which the University purchased in 1922. The Art Department moved in three years later. This center was then enlarged with two more buildings to house the Departments of Drama and Music in 1927. Toward the end of the decade, Sax left UK and English professor Frank Fowler arrived. In 1928, Fowler changed the name of the theatre to the Guignol Theatre (pronounced "geen-yohl") after the popular theatre of the same name in Paris. Fowler also hired Wallace Briggs, who succeeded Fowler as a champion of the theatre.
After serving the cultural needs of the campus and the community for 20 years, the first Guignol Theatre burned down in 1947. In 1950, The Guignol reopened as part of the new Fine Arts Building. It serves as the main stage for the University of Kentucky Department of Theatre and Dance. The theatre was renovated in 2000 and reopened to the public with a grand gala in February 2001. The 388-seat wheelchair accessible proscenium theatre includes a full scene shop, box office, and modern lighting.
