\\’hen the Auburn Plainsinen (or Tigers, if you prefer)
trot onto the Stoll Field turf tonight for their fifth meet- VERSUS
ing with Kentuckyls \Vildcats, it`ll be a strange match
of two former Southeastern Conference "doormats,” now
turned major grid powers on the national scene, battling
to erase the stigma of a frustrating tie that occurred in
their last meeting. H H H
The two teams first got together on the gridiron at      
Lexington in 1934. Both were then a far cry from being
the class of their own league, let alone championship
and bowl contenders as they have ranked in the past few
° years. Kentucky emerged from that first meeting with      
the first blood of the series, a 9-0 success. Auburn 5 9*
evened the count by triumphing the next year at Mont-
gomery and then the rivalry was interrupted for almost
two decades while both clubs virtually went “f1'()ll'l bad STOLL FIELD
to worse" before starting climbs up the football ladder
to the prominence each now enjoys. New U.K. Coach
Blanton Collier guided a \\'ildcat victory in a 1954 test
that resumed the series and last season engineered his
club to an upsetting, 14-14 tic in the face of two—touch-
down underdog odds.
Neither coach or ball club was entirely satished with
this outcome, which was marred by frustrations of un-
