Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Governor's Task Force on Health Care Reform was created by Governor Brereton C. Jones in 1992 to examine health care reform and how to provide health care for all Kentuckians. The task force worked in concert with a 45 member task force called the Task Force on Health Care Access and Affordability. Jones' initial efforts toward health care reform failed during a special session of the General Assembly in May 1993. In 1994, Jones signed a health care reform bill into law that included insurance reforms but not his initial goal of universal health care. Jim Newberry (1956-) served as a chair of the Governor's Task Force on Health Care Reform starting in 1992. Newberry later served as the Mayor of Lexington, Kentucky from 2006-2010.
