Scope and Content
The Olive Cleveland travel diary (dated 1923; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder) consists of a diary kept by Olive during her cruise on board the Mauretania with her husband, Alfred E. Cleveland, from February to April 1932. Cleveland details the places they saw and the culture on board the cruise ship. Spain, Algiers, Greece, Egypt, Lisbon, and Paris were among the places that the couple explored. The diary is especially critical of Arabs and offers commentary on an elite woman's opinion of the Arab culture and the Muslim religion. She also mentions the culture of businessmen on the ship and decries the manners of her "help" compared to the stewards and stewardesses on board the ship. The elite perspective of cultural dissonance is especially prevalent in her travel account.
The Olive Cleveland travel diary is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
