- Biography / History
- Captain Isaac Bowman (1757-1826) fought in the Revolutionary War under George Rogers Clark. After the war, Bowman received large land grants west of the Appalachians in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana, but settled permanently in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Gatewood in 1782, and after her death Mary Chinn. He awarded some of his children legacies in to his western holdings, including John, Joseph, and Washington Bowman.

- Scope and Content
- The Bowman family papers consist of nineteen letters and one property tax receipt which document life in early Kentucky. The letters are primarily to Isaac and Mary Bowman from their children in Kentucky. Notable items include an 1828 letter from Joseph Bowman to his mother, Mary Chinn Bowman, advising her to sell two slaves.
