Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Desha Breckinridge (1867-1935) was the son of Issa Desha Breckinridge and William C. P. Breckinridge. He attended Princeton University and the University of Virginia. He joined the Kentucky bar in 1893 and practiced in his father's Lexington, Kentucky, law firm, Breckinridge & Shelby until 1900. During the Spanish-American War he was an aide de camp to his uncle Major General J. C. Breckinridge. He became the publisher of the Lexington Herald in 1897 and its editor in 1904. Additionally he served as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1920, 1928, and 1932. Breckinridge married Madeline McDowell Breckinridge, a nationally recognized advocate for women's rights and social causes, in 1898. Madeline died in 1920, and Desha Breckinridge married Mary Frazier Lebus in 1929. His siblings included Sophonisba P. Breckinridge, Eleanor Breckinridge Chalkley, and Mary Curry Breckinridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Desha Breckinridge papers consist of correspondence, financial and business records, speeches, and photographs. His extensive correspondence with family, friends, and associates illuminates his business and personal relationships as well as highlights his interests in Democratic politics and horse racing. He corresponded often with his sister Sophonisba, Jouett Shouse, Thomas R. Underwood, and his father W.C.P. Breckinridge. His business and financial papers contain insurance policies, contracts, brokerage accounts, checks, and deposit slips. In particular, they document his involvement with the Lexington Herald and in mining, especially with a Montana company that mined vermiculite and asbestos. Finally, the papers contain family photographs and realia; papers relating to W.C.P. Breckinridge's estate; and a gold pendant given to John C. Breckinridge in 1860.
