- Biography / History
- Ivan H. Loer (1895-1988) was born in Herbst, Indiana to Thomas Loer (1861-1914) and Zarilda Van Winkle (1863-1945). During World War I, he enlisted in the US Navy and was a chief yeoman serving at the San Juan radio station in Puerto Rico. In 1924, he married Mary Louise Huston (1905-1997) and together they had one child, Dorothy Jean (1925-2003). After the war, Loer worked as an architect and builder for the contracting business he owned, Anderson & Loer.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Ivan H. Loer papers (dated 1918; 0.03 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises papers and one letter that document the military service of Ivan Loer in the US Navy during World War I. The letter is sent from his brother while at a snipers camp in Camp Shelby, discussing friends from home that are also in the military, his hopes to see action before the end of the war, and spending time with their family. The papers include a certificate of identification detailing his deployment to Puerto Rico, transfer orders, instructions on which ship to take to Puerto Rico, who to report to upon arrival, approval for furloughs, and orders for medical examinations.
- The Ivan H. Loer papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
