Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Radio station program director Ruth Foxx Newborg graduated from the University of Louisville in 1940. She served as program director of University of Kentucky-sponsored radio station WBKY in Beattyville, Kentucky, from 1940 to 1941. The station was operated by U.K. in cooperation with the Lee County, Kentucky, Board of Education. The station was created as an experiment in bringing educational radio broadcast to the remote Appalachian regions of eastern Kentucky. The venture was short-lived due to limited technology and the mountainous terrain.
- Scope and Content
- The Ruth Foxx Newborg papers (dated 1937-1979, bulk 1937-1941; 1.7 cubic feet; 3 boxes) consist of correspondence, school surveys, a scrapbook, Lee County school rules and regulations, news programs, program schedules, a record list, and scripts for program episodes. These papers reflect Newborg's efforts as radio station manager of WBKY to utilize radio as an educational and cultural medium. Additionally, the collection contains a draft of a 1979 article by Newborg which appeared in Public Telecommunications Review (vol. 7, no.5), and a draft copy of that article entitled "Educational Broadcasting's first rural station, radio station WBKY 1940-1941." The scrapbook contains photographs, clippings, and memorabilia relating to WBKY, Newborg, and Elmer G. Sulzer, who was director of radio activities at the University of Kentucky.
