Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Mt. Sterling Library Association Photographic Collection, 1861-1880 was purchased by the University of Kentucky Libraries in 1986. No other acquisition or provenance information exists.
Scope and Content
The Mt. Sterling Library Association Photographic Collection, 1861-1880 consists of 118 images in 1860's photographic albums and a small number of loose items. Three of the images are ferrotypes (tintypes) and the rest are a mixture of albumen and carbon print cartes de visite. The collection contains mostly unidentified portraits of an unknown Central Kentucky family, and mass-produced images of political and military figures from the Civil War (Union and Confederate.)

Contents of the Collection

Album 1

Cartes de visite photographic album containing thirty-six portraits of an unknown family. Most of the images are from Lexington, Kentucky studios, but a few are from studios in Paris, Kentucky. This possibly indicates a Bourbon County, Kentucky origin for the album.
