Collection Overview

Biography / History
Founded in 1977, the University of Kentucky’s Appalachian Center was established with a mission to support research, instruction, and service programs related to eastern Kentucky and Appalachia. The Center is a multi-disciplinary institute with faculty from the university’s College of Arts and Sciences whose research and interests focus on Appalachian history, culture, economics, and public policy. Directors have included John B. Stephenson (1977-1984), acting director James Houghland (1984-1985), Ronald D Eller (1985-2000), interim director Joe Fink (2004-2005), Evelyn Knight (2005-?), Ann Kingsolver (2011-2015), and Christopher Barton (2015- ).
Scope and Content
The Appalachian Center records (dated 1978-1981, undated; 0.35 cubic feet; 1 box) comprise correspondence, administrative and financial records, and grant proposal materials that document the University of Kentucky's Appalachian Center in its early years under the leadership of John B. Stephenson. The proposed grant project to the National Endowment for the Humanities was titled "Recovering the Black Experience in Southern Appalachia: Proposal for Oral History Research." The collection also includes news clippings, notes, bibliographies, and pamphlets.
