- Biography / History
- Kathryn Logan Flint (1890-1983) was born in Missouri to George Logan (1859-1921) and Mary Anna Murphy (1858-1942). In 1910, Kathryn married Cort Ray Flint (1889-1926) in Dewey, Oklahoma. Together the couple had three children: Cort Jr. (1915-1983), Elizabeth (b. 1916), and Logan (1923-2015). She lived in Oklahoma through 1930, and by the 1950s she had moved to Louisville, Kentucky.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Kathryn Flint papers (dated 1937-1953, undated; 0.35 cubic feet; 4 boxes) comprise letters and photographs that document the life of Kathryn, her family, and friends in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Indiana between the 1930s and 1950s. The letters sent to Kathryn come from her three children, Cort, Elizabeth, and Logan; her sister Leslie, and friends and grandchildren. In the letters from Cort, he discusses running into friends of hers, his work as a pastor, moving to different towns, and seeing relatives. Letters from Elizabeth discuss visiting relatives, her family, how her children are doing in school and careers, attending church, and gossiping about letters received from relatives. The letters from Logan come from him and his wife Betty, and discuss them both working, Logan having to live away from the family for work, his search for a new position, and updates on their family. Kathryn's sister, Leslie, writes frequently, discussing her health, hospital visits, how her husband is faring, and seeing friends. Towards the end of 1953, Leslie's husband John is writing her letters and is keeping Kathryn up to date on Leslie's health until Leslie passes in September of 1953. The letters from grandchildren and friends discuss finishing school, employment, personal health, daily life, and updates on Leslie's condition. The photographs most likely document the Flint family's activities in the 1930s and 1940s, along with many of the men's military service. Additionally, there are a few poems and religions scripture included in the collection.
- The Kathryn Flint papers are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
