- Biography / History
- The Hensley family of Louisville, Kentucky included Robert B. Hensley (1911-2013), his wife Dorothy Curry (1918-2002), and his seven children: Robert II (1942-2011), Mary, Jeanne, Rick, Tim, Deborah, and Stephen. Robert Sr. grew up in Burlington, Kentucky at attended the University of Kentucky where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1936. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Air Force as a member of the 444th Bomber Group, 54th Wing from 1942 to 1946 in the China-Burma-India theatre, and was released at the rank of lieutenant colonel. Following his service in the military, Robert was highly involved in politics and business, including: Acting Chairman & Director of the KY Commonwealth Unemployment Compensation Commission, General Counsel for the KY Coal Association, organized, VP and General Counsel for Green River Steel Corporation, partner in the law firm of Hensley & Logan, and founder, CEO, and President of Life Insurance of KY. He also served on a number of boards; Kentuckiana Children's Home, Catherine Spalding College, Eastern Kentucky University, Future Farmers of America, the Boy Scouts of America, and was Chairman to the Alliance for Progress for the State of Kentucky.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Hensley family Christmas cards (dated 1963-1964, undated; 0.04 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise five Christmas cards sent from the Hensley family of Louisville, Kentucky in the mid-to-late twentieth century. The Christmas cards show pictures of the family members as they grow up, get married, and have children, along with sending the card recipients best wishes for a good holiday season.
- The Hensley family Christmas cards are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
