Collection Overview

Biography / History
Herman Lee Donovan was born on March 17, 1887, in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky. He graduated from Minerva High School in 1905, and was the first student enrolled at the Western Kentucky State Normal School (now Western Kentucky University), graduating from that institution in 1908. Donovan earned his bachelor's degree from State University (now University of Kentucky) in 1914, his master's from Columbia Teachers College (now Columbia University) in 1920, and his doctorate from George Peabody College for Teachers (now Peabody College of Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1925. From 1921-1928, Donovan was a professor education at both Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College (now Eastern Kentucky University) in Richmond, Kentucky (1921-1928) and at George Peabody College (1924-1928). From 1928-1941, served as President of the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College. In 1941, he was appointed the fourth President of the University of Kentucky and served in that role until he retired in 1956. Donovan also served as president of the American Association of Teachers Colleges (1934-1935) and the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges (1938-1939). He and his wife, the former Nell James Stuart of Pembroke, had no children. He died on Nov. 21, 1964, in Lexington.
