Collection Overview

Biography / History
June Justus (1888-1971) was born in Lima, Ohio to Louis E. Justus (1861-1938) and Alice P. Perkins (1860-1902). In 1912, she married Samuel Raymond Dunham (1884-1964) and together the couple had three children, Harold (b. 1916), Eleanor (1919-1988), and Richard S. (1924-2001). Samuel was a Methodist pastor. No other biographical information available.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The June Justus letters (dated 1907-1909, 1934; 0.11 cubic feet; 4 folders) comprises letters that document the daily life of the friends and family of June Justus in Ohio while she is attending college in the early twentieth century. The letters from her father discuss his personal health, his excitement at her coming home for holiday's, how her siblings are faring, his work as an insurance agent, helping out at his church, and getting married after the death of June's mother. June's sister writes to her about making clothing, finishing high school, sending care packages to June, helping out with preserving food, and local gossip. June's friends write about attending college, getting in and out of relationships, spending time with friends, employment, travel, their hopes to see June soon, marriage plans of mutual friends, attending social events. Additionally, there is one letter written to June's father from a man asking for financial assistance.
The June Justus letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
