Collection Overview

Biography / History
The White family of Kalamazoo, Michigan consisted of Stephen White (1862-1922) and his wife, Annie May Given (1890-1941). The couple married in 1874 in Michigan. Together they had five children, Viola Bernadette White (b. 1890), Mary White (1982-1942), Leo White (1896-1988), William White (1899-1965) and Francis White (1902-1960). No other biographical information available.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The White family letters (dated 1911-1922, undated; 0.06 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprises letters sent to members of the White family of Kalamazoo, Michigan during the early part of the twentieth century. This collection includes letters sent to Bernadette White, her brother Leo White and other members of the White family. Bernadette receives letters from a school friend and her brother, Francis. Brenadette's friend writes about staying at the Lakewood Cottages in Muskegon, Michigan. She also sends a condolence letter to Bernadette after the death of a man named Billy. Francis writes to his sister about updates at school and the family home as he is the youngest sibling. Leo White writes to his mother about his time working at a base hospital and gives her details about spending his Thanksgiving there. Leo also receives a letter from his cousin who discusses football, the World Series, and school. Also included are report cards belonging to Leo White from Gibbons Hall Catholic College.
The White family letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
