Biography / History
Businessman, manufacturer. Burrell Thurman, a Washington County, Ky. native moved to Louisville with his family while still in his youth. In 1839 Thurman established a lumber business in Louisville which he operated until 1870. Following the sale of his lumber business, he accepted the presidency of the Louisville Chair and Furniture Manufacturing Company and later bought into the business.
Scope and Content
This collection includes the business papers of Louisville businessman Burrell H. Thurman. The materials consist of correspondence, business records and printed documents such as pamphlets and broadsides. Most of the correspondence is business related, although letters from relatives and friends are included. The financial records include bills, receipts and account ledgers mainly from Thurman's lumberyard. There is also some material related to the Louisville Chair and Furniture Manufacturing Company. Printed matter includes a book entitled THE CHART OF LIFE by J. Henry, (New York, 1857), and three pamphlets: LOUISVILLE HOUSE CARPENTER'S BOOK OF PRICES (1849), INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD-FELLOWS, Louisville, Azur Lodge no. 25, constitution and bylaws (1846), and the constitution and bylaws of the TEMPLARS OF HONOR AND TEMPERENCE of Louisville (1850).
