- Biography / History
- Kentucky author and musician James Hines (1926-2017) was born in and, other than youthful travels around the country, lived most of his life in Rosine, Kentucky. He graduated from Horse Branch High School and attended the University of Kentucky. He was a writer and songwriter who wrote about rural life in more than 400 short stores and articles in a very wide range of American, Canadian, and British periodicals. He considered Bill Monroe, the legendary Bluegrass musician who was also from Rosine, a friend and mentor.
- Scope and Content
- The James Hines literary papers (dated 1925-2009; 3 cubic feet; 8 boxes) comprise manuscripts, published articles, song lyrics, and correspondence that document James Hines' literary career. The collection contains a few items related to his personal life, reflected in personal correspondence and photographs; however the collection is primarily focused on his professional work as a writer. There are typescript manuscripts for numerous short stories and his novel The Legend of Doc Brown. The bulk of the collection contains published articles, which Hines signed before he donated the collection. Hines' writing appeared in an eclectic range of publications, from prestigious literary journals such as The Laurel Review to popular Western fiction publications, such as Zane Gray and The Golden West. Some stories appeared in magazines like Hustler, Women's Household, and Kentucky Living. A small portion of the collection contains Hines' song lyrics, music cds on which his songs appeared, and a demo tape for his song, "River of Tears". There are photographs of James Hines with his friend and Bluegrass mentor, Bill Monroe.
